METHODICAL PROCESSES ARE JUST HIS STYLE:
Meet student intern Carlos Alvarez
At 34, and with 14 years of military experience, he's not the typical college student. Still, asked what appeals to him about the GOMETRORail internship program, Carlos Alvarez only half-jokingly tells you, "I get to color."
One part of his job with Parsons is to study design plans showing existing underground utility lines and, using old-school colored pencils, expose any conflicts. His work is crucial to civil engineers responsible for the proper placement of various utility lines to accommodate the new light rail lines. He also monitors all permits and agreements for HRT, in addition to overseeing work in the field.
A construction management major at the University of Houston, Carlos hopes to continue his work with Parsons or METRO when he graduates this December.
"I never thought about civil construction before, but this job sparked my interest," he says. "Unlike commercial construction where you're dealing with one piece of land and a building, this work is more like a big puzzle, with lots of different pieces that all have to come together perfectly. That's exciting to me."
